When you think of family photos in Sydney, your mind might go straight to the beach or a leafy park. But some of the most striking, colourful, and fun shoots I’ve done have been right in the middle of the city.
The CBD is full of character: cobblestone laneways in The Rocks, grand sandstone at Town Hall, polished glass and steel at Martin Place, leafy Hyde Park, and tucked-away corners at the State Library and Barracks. For families who want something a little bit different, the city is a playground of texture, light, and personality.
As a Sydney CBD family photographer, I capture families exploring these iconic spots in their own way — walking laneways, laughing on the steps, or sipping coffee as the buzz of the city hums around them.
City sessions aren’t for everyone, but they’re perfect if you’re after photos that stand out from the crowd.
When you book a city session, you’ll choose the area to explore — and each offers its own unique vibe.
Grand stairs, soaring sandstone columns, and polished drama in the civic heart of the city. The weekends are best here — the usual weekday bustle disappears, giving kids space to run and families room to breathe.
Historic cobblestones, old brick laneways, and sweeping views of the Harbour Bridge. From here, you can also look across the water to the Opera House. It’s always busy, but we embrace the hustle and bustle — it adds to the atmosphere of the photos.
The Opera House is the ultimate icon, with its wide forecourt, dramatic sails, and Circular Quay in the background. The very best time here is sunrise — soft light, peaceful surrounds, and far fewer crowds.
A gentler city option that blends greenery and history. Kids can twirl under huge old trees or sit on the lawns, while the heritage sandstone buildings give a timeless architectural backdrop.
Urban sessions love both casual and dressed-up styles.
Can we include more than one location in our shoot?
Your session can be tailored to whatever you want it to be, but I’m always mindful of the distance we cover. You don’t want to spend the whole time walking from one place to another. The good news is I know all the hidden nooks and crannies — which means we can get a huge variety of backdrops within a really small radius. It keeps the session easy, relaxed, and focused on you rather than rushing around.
What if the kids get restless?
That’s the beauty of city shoots. There are always stairs to climb, walls to lean on, and spaces to explore.
What if it rains?
We can reschedule, or lean into it — the CBD has awnings, covered corners, and reflections in puddles that make for striking images.
If you’re looking for a Sydney CBD family photographer who knows all the best corners — from The Rocks and Circular Quay to Town Hall, Martin Place, Hyde Park and beyond — I’d love to capture your family’s city adventure.
